Deja vu
Help Unsell the War...Again
There was a government agency in 1914-1918, the Committee on Public Information, whose
job was to sell the case for war. Hundreds of artists donated their time and talents to the
Division of Pictorial Publicity,
including James Montgomery Flagg. Originally published as the cover for the 6 Jul 1916 issue of
Leslie's Weekly, this portrait of "Uncle Sam" immediately became an American icon of
patriotism. Over four million copies were printed between 1917 and 1918.
In the 1970s, a grass-roots anti-war publicity campaign was begun by the
Committee to Help Unsell
the War. Hundreds of artists and advertising folks donated their time and talents to the cause. The
"I Want Out" poster was created for this campaign as a serious parody to Flagg's "I Want You" version.
Now, more than ever, we think it's time to get Uncle Sam working once more -- to bring our troops home.
We've re-issued the 1971 work as an 18" x 24" poster and letter-sized flyer. Reproduce as many as you
can and post everywhere.
